Next week the T.M.Lewin design team is off to Italy for the session of style spotting at the Mecca of menswear, Pitti Uomo in Florence. Twice a year fashion followers, trendsetters and brand buyers all head to the historical Fortezza da Basso for inspiration. Built in the early 1500s, it plays host to the world famous trade show, which covers everything from suiting to street wear.
The event itself dates back to the early 1950s, when the first fashion shows were staged in Sala Bianca in Palazzo Pitti. The dark postwar days almost over, international buyers and fashion moguls gathered under the twinkling crystal chandeliers to see the very best of Italian style.
Today an area of 59,000 square metres is dedicated to the world of men’s fashion and is visited by over 30,000 people, including the industry’s top movers and shakers. It has also become one of the best places in the world to people watch – a real-life catwalk of uber-fashionable men and women – some admittedly a little more eccentric in their attire than others.
We’ll be back soon with our own Pitti trend report, so watch this space…
