Whether it is a corporate suit or more casual attire you reach for in the morning, what you wear for work is largely dependent on the industry you work in. However, what we wear in the office has rapidly changed in recent years and it is continuing to develop around us.
Office Wear in the Past
During the early 1900’s, formal ladies suits were accepted as the standard office ‘uniform’ for women, as the plain materials and neutral colours complimented the conservative tone of the office. With very little variation in style, these 3-piece women’s suits provided almost no individuality.

Stepping into the present day, dress codes have undergone significant changes, with many offices taking a more relaxed approach.
Suits for women whether it be a skirt, or a trouser suit seems to still be viewed as the appropriate attire for meetings and interviews. However, in the everyday office, they are not always viewed as ‘the norm’, with the exception of the more traditional industries such as banking and the legal profession.
Many companies are making a move towards a more relaxed, ‘smart casual’ office dress code through the introduction of the concept of ‘dress down Friday’s’.
‘Smart casual’ has provided much more flexibility and variation in what people can wear to work. For women, office wear is now much more exciting, with vivid colours and embellishments. Women are now able to add their own personal touches to their outfits. Many women choose formal dresses, pencil skirts, skinny trousers and women’s shirts, with a smart jacket, trendy necklaces, colourful scarves and statement seasonal shoes.
An area that was previously overlooked by retailers and designers, the growing office dress market, it is now an area that is being fully addressed, providing smart and stylish work clothes for women. This allows women to have a brimming wardrobe for work, but also to follow fashion trends too, whilst remaining professional, feminine and chic.
