3 Ways To Spot A Cheap Suit

TM Lewin Suit

You might think that you look the business in your brand new suit, but to the trained eye you could just be a walking eyesore. There are a few tell-tale signs that distinguish a well-tailored suit from one that should stay on the hanger where it belongs. Here are our top tips on what to look out for when shopping for a suit.

Sizing

This is one of the simplest and most sure-fire ways to spot a cheap suit. If the size on the back resembles t-shirt sizes such as S or XL, then you can be sure that it is a factory made suit that most likely won’t fit very well. Just remember that your body shape, height, and weight are all taken into account when tailoring a suit, so telling the assistant you’re a large just won’t cut it.

Fabric Skimping

Slim fit suits are where it’s at right now, but even though a skinny suit seems to use less material, there still should be excess at the trouser hems in order to lengthen the pants. Your waistline and the seat of your suit pants should always have excess fabric so you can easily have the waist adjusted. This is often where cheap manufacturers cut their costs considerably.

Wrong Fit

It’s all in the shoulders. A well-made suit should have smooth shoulder lines with no creasing or gathering. This is because the suit will be sized correctly according to your actual measurements. Cheaper suit makers will assume that a certain sized man has certain sized shoulders and, more often than not, they’ll be wrong. The armholes should also be at the correct height and not too low. What we don’t want to see if you raise your arms is a man that looks like he has slightly webbed armpits – a serious design flaw.

You might think you’ll get away with a cheap suit once you’ve some decent formal shirts to pair it off with, but you’d be wrong. A good suit says a lot about you, but a cheap suit says even more. You don’t have to break the bank to get suited just right but you will have to avoid cheap imitations.
